Stories from Väruld
Stories from the world of Väruld.
Whispers of poems, fragments of lore, and echoes of distant journeys. Some tales unfold in moments, others across many paths. Voices shaped by AI bring the realm to life — diverse, timeless, and just beyond the veil of reality. Updated weekly.
Väruld is a fantasy world I have created, which also includes books with detailed descriptions and novels.
All stories (unless otherwise stated) are written by me, Désirée Nordlund.

The stories in the pods are fragments, but what if you can see where they take place on a map like this: https://storiesfromvaruld.netlify.app/worldmap.html
Also discussions about the use of AI.

You are listening to stories from Väruld. In this episode, the behind the scenes of this podcast, part five.
HostWelcome to Behind the Scenes, where Väruld's creator, Désirée Nordlund, is interviewed. Her AI voice is with me today as usual. Hello, Désirée. Hello. I know you want to present a new feature today, Désirée. I do.
AI-DésiréeStories from Väruld presents fragments, and that is how I want it. But in many episodes, I've added a link to a world map so you can see where the episode is taking place. That way you can see other episodes from the same area too.
HostThat could be one way to link episodes together, I agree. Giving it visual and geographic context. Good idea. There are a microphone icon for the podcast episodes, but what are the clef icons on the map?
AI-DésiréeThat is music I've made in Suno for the world. There are a few anthems, hymns from the temples, songs from the taverns, and so on.
HostYou really try to give us a lot of flavours.
AI-DésiréeThank you. One of the advantages of AI is that it is easier to work on your dream project, like this podcast, and making music. A disadvantage is that not everyone's projects are that good. I hope my work is not in that category. But it is very rewarding for me, no matter what.
PresenterYou work a lot with AI, not just this podcast.
AI-DésiréeI do. My background is in system developing, and I find AI a fascinating tool. Within programming, there has not been much of a debate about the use of AI, not as it has been within more cultural areas. For me, I found it a great tool for language, for instance. English is not my native language, and I worked hard for many years to write high-quality English. It feels better to spend that time on create things. That is what I love doing. Don't your customers get upset when you use AI? I used AI illustrations already at my first Varreled Kickstarter. I think they know. I've also stated that I use AI in more general terms on Itch, where I sell my material. I use what I find helpful and fun.
HostAnd so you just tell an AI to create you a character.
AI-DésiréeNo no. You don't get good high-quality characters with depth that way. You need to know what you want and take it step by step with an AI. So if I ask, let's say, ChatGPT, to give me a stonemason, I get a very generic stonemason. You have to give it more to work with, which means you have to create the character. Then you can get help from AI with skills you don't have, like a likely background for a stonemason, likely damages to his body by the work, and so on. And of course with the language, but there as well you need to know what you want, or you'll get generic writing. So you don't think that using AI is stealing? No. We have always been inspired by others' work. And the lawyers will figure out rules for training if needed.
HostA pleasure talking to you, Désirée. That was all for tonight, good folks.
AI-DésiréeThank you for listening to my podcast. And don't forget to check out the map and let me know what you think about it.
PresenterThank you for listening to Stories from Väruld. In the next episode, Lore, The birth of the Allvaldughers.
